Untangling anchor chain = fun!

What a way to spend a glorious weekend on the boat. The sun was shining, the weather was warm. Lake Union was full of boats. I was untangling anchor chain in the v-berth.

But, it needed to be done. We were in some big waves a couple of weekends ago. It appears the 300 feet of anchor chain lifted up in the locker, inverted, and fell back to earth tangled. It took me about an hour of fighting to sort it out and find the problem. And a bit longer to resolve it.

The culprit turned out to be the board in the photo below. It is meant as the floor of the chain locker. The weight of the chain seems to have broken the board and the whole mess fell down into the bottom of the locker. The board wedged in there and prevented the chain from moving.

Happy Boating this Memorial Day weekend

We hope you are all having a wonderful time on your boats this long holiday weekend.

Please take a moment to look at that flag we all fly so proudly on our boats and remember that far too many have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect that flag, our country, our freedom, and our way of life.

Happy and safe boating to all.

Women On Water at the Grand Banks Rendezvous

One thing notable about most couples who take to boating is that when it comes to docking (or generally navigating in tight quarters), you’re most likely to find the male at the helm.  Note that I didn’t say all, as we have encountered couples where this was not the case at all, it’s just that generally speaking, it’s the guy who takes the boat into the slip, and the gal who’s standing ready to tie up ashore.

Enter the WOW or Women On Water course offered at the Grand Banks Rendezvous, a very popular 2 hour course where women can, among other women and in a calm, stress-free environment, learn the simple steps for bringing a boat in to a dock.   Northwest Explorations graciously provided the Tyee, a 42′ Grand Banks, for the classes, and Byron Richards served as instructor for most if not all of the sessions.   The classes are so popular that they fill well in advance of the rendezvous with wait lists in case of openings.

Chipotle Pork Loin and Three Chile Salsa Tacos

One of the events at the Grand Banks rendezvous was an appetizer potluck. Everyone was asked to bring a mexican themed “heavy” appetizer for about 20 people. As our contribution we chose a chipotle pork loin taco with a really nifty three chile salsa. The salsa has a deep rich smoky flavor with moderate heat. Yum. The whole thing is easy to make. Make it ahead of time and assemble it on the boat. But make up a batch of margaritas first!

Both recipes come from Rick Bayless cookbooks. I can’t remember which ones, though. Sorry. And they may not be entirely accurate reproductions. The pork can be used in multiple dishes. The salsa is great on pork and probably most everything else.

Time to head south and back to Seattle

Sunday morning. The Grand Banks rendezvous is over. Time to go. Boats started leaving early. Real early.

I managed to get a few photos of some of the boats departing. A number of folks had already departed by the time I thought of it, though.
